Mr. Etzioni, I must first say that I really appreciate your writing, and I especially recommend your book "From Empire To Community". However, I am troubled by your blind spot regarding all things Israel. Especially your comment that "Israel has repeatedly declared itself willing to give up its nukes if other nations in the area would agree to form a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, as part of a comprehensive peace deal" and "Iran does not [aspire to a zone free of WMDs]". That is disengenuous at best. For example, consider WaPo Mar 6, 2005 "Push for Nuclear-Free Middle East Resurfaces". It is Arab countries led by Egypt and Saudi Arabia that are pushing for a nuclear-free region. Israeli ambassador Daniel Ayalon said that a "Middle East nuclear-free zone "will be viewed very favorably by Israel once we have a comprehensive peace in the area and there are no dangers of attacks or delegitimization by any other country"" Hardy a commitment to give up its nukes "as part of a comprehensive peace deal" as you say. Other Israeli officials argue "that their nuclear weapons do not represent a threat to other nations, only a deterrent to protect their country from invasion by larger neighbors". Again, not a mention of giving them up. And from the IHT "Israel and the United States voted against the proposal, as they have at past sessions, while 53 countries - Muslim states and their supporters from the developing world - backed it." And what about your statement that Iran does not support a nuclear-free zone? From the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4756652.stm: Ahmadinejad says "We too demand that the Middle East be free of nuclear weapons". I must admit I just used Google to glean these facts, and maybe you know of recent or ignored statements from the Israeli and/or Iranian government contradicting these facts. But your statement is so extraordinary, I believe the onus is on you to provide stronger supporting evidence.
